Mitchell
beskrevet i Bofors Mitchell.
ORGANISING MITCHELL
One sitting pair and one moving pair are placed by every table. You
place one boardset on every table.
With 5 tables you use 5 boardset, with 6 tables you need 6 boardset etc.
The principal rule is that the moving pairs move in one direction after
every round while the boardsets move in the oposite direction. When you
have played the same numbers of rounds as there are tables, all sitting
pairs has met all the moving pairs and all pairs has played all boards.
The principal rules are:
- The sitting pairs sits
NS and has the same pairnumber as the number of the table.
- The moving pairs sits
EW and has the samme pairnumber as the number of the table + the number of tables in the
tournament.
- The boardset has the same
number as the number of the table it started on.
- Every new round the moving
pairs move to the nearest higher table (from the highest table to table
#1).
- The boards are played
numbervice (ex: 1-2-3 etc), so the boardset move to the nearest lower table. (from table #1
to the highest table).
With this easy moving plan you don't need to make guidecards. Just remember to inform the pairs before you start. It is important that the boardsets and pairs are moved in the right direction or you will get a lot of problem later in the tournament. To make the moving easier you should form the tables like in a "U" form so the lowest table is placed near the highest table (look at the Mitchell example).
There are two ways of organizing a Mithell tournament. With an even number of tables and with odd numbers. It is important to know that you can't organize an even numbers Mitchell as an odd numbers Mitchell and vis a versa. These two ways of organizing the moving are made so that all pairs play all the boardssets and meet all pairs who sits in the other diredtion.
Here are the two ways of organizing Mitchell with examples.
| Odd Numbers
This is the easiest Mitchell tournament to organize. The pair- and boardset movements are as described above.

Even Numbers
To get an even Numbers Mitchell tournament to work, you need to make a change of the boardsets movement. If not, you will discover that after halfplayed tournament the pairs will get boards they have played before. To solve this problem you have to insert a "blind" table between the two middle tables. (between table 3 and 4 in the example). This "blind" table is only used as a moving station for the boardsets. When you place the boardsets before you start, boardset #1 is placed at table #1, #2 at table #2 and so on until you reach the "blind" table. You place a boardset at the "blind" table and continue. Before you reach the highest tablenumber you will find that you have run out of boards. But thats right because the highest table has to share boards with table 1. When it is time to move, the pairs ignore the "blind table. But the boardsets move throu the "blind" table so that in the example belowe, the boardset on table 4 moves to the "blind" table, and the boardset on the "blind" table moves to table 3. The boardset on table 1 moves to the next highest table. (The symbols in the example is the same as Odd #) |
